Louis Rees-Zammit has confirmed he will return to playing as a winger for both his club, Bristol, and the Welsh national team in the upcoming season. However, he retains the flexibility to play as a full-back if needed. During the previous season, Rees-Zammit spent much of his time in the full-back position, a shift from his traditional role on the right wing. This change came after he returned to rugby last summer, following nearly two years away from the sport during which he tried to build a career in the NFL. Rees-Zammit admitted that the previous season was not his best, citing the long time away from the game and the challenge of adapting to a new position. He played approximately three-quarters of the season at full-back, a role he hadn't undertaken in nearly two years. While he found it difficult to settle into the position, he noted that his experience as a winger would help him stay grounded and focused. Last season, Rees-Zammit started 22 games for club and country, with 10 of those as a winger (position 14) and 12 as a full-back (position 15). He scored nine tries in total, with seven for Bristol and two for Wales. Only one of those tries was scored after he returned to the wing position in May during a match against Northampton. Six of his tries were scored while playing as a winger. Although he enjoyed playing full-back, he feels he is less effective as a finisher in that role and prefers playing on the wing. Rees-Zammit had a full summer to prepare for the new season but missed the first block of training with Bristol due to his participation in the Wales Nations' Championship in July. Bristol finished sixth in the league last season, missing out on the play-offs by nine points after a decline in form during the spring. The team recorded 11 wins, the same as Exeter, who finished third and reached the final, which they lost to Northampton. Rees-Zammit acknowledged that the team fell short of their goals last season, citing a lack of tries and bonus points, which they aim to improve upon this season.
