Google has introduced a new feature called Gemini Skills to users with free personal accounts, allowing them to save and reuse prompts across different conversations. This means users no longer have to retype the same instructions every time they want to perform a task, such as writing a document or following a specific style. Gemini Skills are designed to replace Gems, which were previously used in the Gemini ecosystem, and aim to streamline repetitive tasks by turning common instructions into ready-to-use formats. A Skill can include a series of instructions and even reference documents. Users can create Skills by describing their needs to Gemini or through a dedicated section in the settings. Once saved, a Skill can be activated using the character « / », and Gemini may use it automatically when relevant. Multiple Skills can be combined in a single conversation, allowing users to apply tone, formatting, or method rules simultaneously without writing long prompts for each task.
However, not all of Gemini's features are compatible with Skills yet. They do not work with Canvas, the creation and editing space within Gemini, or Deep Research, the deep search function. Additionally, free access to Skills does not unlock Gemini Spark or related scheduling features. The rollout of Skills is happening gradually and is currently limited to users who are at least 18 years old, have a personal Google account, and have the « Keep Activity » option enabled. Professional and school accounts will need to wait for access.
Google plans to automatically migrate existing Gems from personal accounts to Skills starting in November. This is not the first time a company has introduced such a feature. Anthropic offers similar tools with Claude, including on its free tier, while OpenAI provides similar features in ChatGPT, though access is currently limited to certain Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, and Edu accounts. Google adds a unique feature by allowing users to import Skills created on other platforms by uploading a SKILL.md file. This could help users who have already invested time in creating prompts for their assistant avoid starting from scratch.
The introduction of Gemini Skills represents a step forward in making AI tools more efficient and user-friendly. By allowing users to save and reuse common instructions, Google aims to reduce the time and effort required for repetitive tasks. As the feature continues to roll out, it may influence how other companies approach similar tools in the future. For now, users with free personal accounts can begin exploring Gemini Skills and see how they can streamline their interactions with AI.
