Spain considers hosting Top 14 final in Barcelona

Spain is in talks with the Ligue Nationale de Rugby (LNR) about hosting a Top 14 rugby final in Barcelona in 2029 or 2030, according to The Times. The proposed venue is the new Camp Nou stadium, which will have a capacity of 105,000 seats once completed. No formal agreement has been reached yet.

2016 final at Camp Nou set a record

The Camp Nou previously hosted the Top 14 final in 2016, when Racing 92 defeated RC Toulon 29-21. The match drew 99,124 spectators, setting a world record for attendance at a club rugby match at the time. Racing 92 had to play with 14 players after a key player was sent off.

Rugby final moved due to Euro 2016

In 2016, the Top 14 final was moved to Barcelona because the Euro 2016 football tournament occupied major French stadiums. This time, Spain is taking the initiative to host the event, aiming to attract major rugby competitions permanently.

New Camp Nou could break attendance record

The renovated Camp Nou could surpass the 2016 record with its capacity of 105,000 seats, which would be 5,876 more than the 2016 attendance. However, achieving full capacity in a rugby setup would require selling all the seats, which is not guaranteed.

Hosting final offers media exposure

For the LNR, hosting the final at the Camp Nou would provide significant media exposure. The stadium is one of the most famous in Europe, and a French rugby final there would increase the championship's visibility. However, logistical challenges remain, including fan movement and event organization.

Spain's broader rugby development plan

Spain's rugby federation is pursuing a larger strategy, including entering the Challenge Cup and eventually the United Rugby Championship. The federation also aims to host the men's World Cup in 2035. The Camp Nou hosting a Top 14 final could be a step toward achieving these goals.
