The Chalmazel ski station, the only ski station in the Loire department of France, will reopen "exceptionally" for two weeks starting on December 19 for the 2026–27 winter season. This marks the first time the station will be open since it closed entirely in October 2025 due to financial constraints. The station faced a potential deficit of 450,000 euros if it had remained open, prompting its temporary closure. The reopening will take place in stages, beginning with Wednesdays, weekends, and school holidays. The first phase of operations will run from December 19 to January 3, focusing only on the beginner area and two of the station’s chairlifts. This limited reopening reflects the station’s current financial and operational challenges, as well as efforts to manage costs while still providing some access to skiers. The decision to reopen was driven by local efforts and commitments. The commune of Chalmazel has pledged 150,000 euros to support the initiative, while the local association Tout schuss avec Chalmazel has worked to translate community support into practical proposals. The mayor of Chalmazel, Valéry Gouttefarde, expressed his happiness about the news, calling it a significant achievement for the region and acknowledging the contributions of volunteers and the municipal council. The department emphasized that this reopening is an "exceptional" measure and that discussions about the station’s future will continue until June 2027. The goal is to gradually expand operations while ensuring financial sustainability and community involvement remain central to the process.
