A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth football player, Marvins Antoine, was killed, and another player was injured in a stabbing attack in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday. The incident occurred shortly after the team lost a home game to Framingham State, and the players went to a nightclub in the city. According to authorities, an altercation began at the Mezzo Lounge and escalated to the parking lot of a nearby Wendy's restaurant around midnight. Antoine, an 18-year-old freshman running back, was stabbed in the chest and later died at Rhode Island Hospital. A second player, 19-year-old defensive back Kensley Macean, suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his head, neck, and arm and was hospitalized. A 19-year-old UMass Dartmouth student, Chukuwnonoso Uzoma Eze, has been arrested and charged with murder. Police said Eze is not a member of the football team and that investigators are still looking into the circumstances that led to the attack. At a press conference, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez mentioned that the altercation began between a woman and some of the victims who were in line at the nightclub. The conflict later moved to the Wendy's parking lot, but there was no indication that the individuals involved knew each other. Surveillance footage from nearby Flock cameras helped identify the car Eze fled in, leading to his arrest on campus. UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller expressed his condolences for Antoine’s death and wished for a speedy recovery for Macean. Antoine, who graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River, was described by former teammates as a role model and a loyal, kind person. Orlando Delgado, a former high school teammate, said Antoine was a peacemaker who wanted to pursue a career in the NFL. Delgado’s mother, Ashania Chambers, called Antoine "an older brother to everybody" and expressed deep sadness over the tragic incident. Another former teammate, Xavier Gracia, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Antoine’s positive influence on those around him.
