The Ouest-France/Quai des Bulles Prize has announced the five finalists for its 2026 edition. These titles were selected from 10 albums published between June 1, 2025, and May 31, 2026. The shortlisted works include Akari by Marco Kohinata (Le Lézard Noir), Mémoires d'un garçon agité by Zabus and Valérie Vernay (Dargaud), La mise à mort du tétras lyre by David Combet (Glénat), Punk à sein by Magali Le Huche (Dargaud), and Tekoha by Clara Chotil (Actes Sud). The prize is judged by nine people aged 18 to 35, who will meet again on October 10 during the Quai des Bulles festival in Saint-Malo to select the winner. The ceremony will take place at 12:30 in the Cartier rotunda of the Palais du Grand Large. A meeting with the winning author or authors will follow at 16:00, hosted by Laurent Beauvallet, a journalist for Ouest-France. The winner will receive a grant of 2000 euros, funded by Ouest-France and Ici Bretagne, who are partners for the 2026 edition. The winning album will also be promoted in the newspaper's columns. The prize is one of several awarded annually during the Quai des Bulles festival, which celebrates comics and graphic novels. Since its creation, the Ouest-France/Quai des Bulles Prize has recognized notable works such as Lulu, femme nue by Étienne Davodeau in 2009, Une vie chinoise by Li Kunwu and Philippe Ôtié in 2010, Elmer by Gerry Alanguilan in 2011, Kililana Song by Benjamin Flao in 2012, and Le Loup des mers by Riff Reb's in 2013. In 2025, the Ouest-France/Quai des Bulles Prize was awarded to Paco Roca and Rodrigo Terrasa for L'Abîme de l'oubli, published by Delcourt editions. The album explores the fate of José Celda, who was executed in 1940 under the Franco regime and buried in a common grave. It also follows the efforts of his daughter to locate his remains decades later. This year's finalists will be judged on the same criteria, with the winner receiving both financial support and increased visibility through the Ouest-France newspaper. The Quai des Bulles festival, held annually in Saint-Malo, is one of the most important events in the European comics scene. It brings together creators, publishers, and fans to celebrate the medium through exhibitions, discussions, and awards. The Ouest-France/Quai des Bulles Prize plays a key role in highlighting emerging and established talent in the field of graphic storytelling. The selection of the five finalists reflects the diversity and quality of the comics published in the past year.
