The release of the Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) soundtrack has sparked renewed conversations about Rockstar Games’ decision to not offer the game on physical discs. The developer unveiled a 34-track compilation that will be available on CD and vinyl on the same day as the game’s launch. The album features a mix of original music from a diverse group of global artists, including rapper Travis Scott, country singer Morgan Wallen, and UK singer PinkPantheress. The first six tracks, revealed at the time of the announcement, also include rapper Yung Lean, British DJ Fred Again, and Rolling Stone Keith Richards. GTA games are known for featuring multiple in-game radio stations, each with its own musical theme that players can tune into while driving. Historically, these soundtracks have relied heavily on licensed music from established artists, though original songs have also been included. Rockstar has stated that GTA 6 will feature a "dynamic score" and an "evolution of in-game radio," aiming to push the boundaries of how music is integrated into the gameplay experience. Being featured in a GTA game can significantly boost an artist's visibility, introducing their music to a new audience. The impact of GTA's music choices on streaming platforms has been substantial. For instance, Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road," used in the first trailer for GTA 6, saw its Spotify streams increase by 36,979% after the trailer was released. Similarly, "Hot Together" by the Pointer Sisters experienced a major surge when it was featured in the game's second trailer. A collection of tracks from the recent "Extended Look" on Netflix also attracted a wave of new listeners in the week following its premiere. According to MusicEXP, a music and gaming publication, the biggest spike was seen in "But I Think It's a Dream" by Captain & Tennille, which jumped from 70 streams to 80,744 in a single week. Other tracks, such as Cliff Richard's "Devil Woman" and Prefab Sprout's "Cars and Girls," also saw significant increases in streams. There was also a noticeable rise in activity on the music detection app Shazam for songs featured in the 26-minute broadcast. Not all artists are happy with Rockstar's use of their music. Martyn Ware, a member of the synth pop band Heaven 17, criticized the developer on social media, accusing them of offering a "pitiful" deal to use the band's 1983 hit "Temptation." Despite such pushback, GTA 6 is expected to be one of the most significant entertainment releases of all time when it launches on 19 November. The previous installment, GTA 5, set records when it was released in 2013 and has sold over 200 million copies since. Two official trailers for GTA 6 have amassed nearly 500 million combined views on YouTube, and the Netflix "extended look" reportedly topped the platform's charts, even after several leaks occurred ahead of its release. Rockstar is also currently involved in an employment tribunal in Scotland, where it is defending itself against claims that it illegally fired a group of former employees for attempting to form a union. The company strongly denies these allegations, stating that the employees were let go due to gross misconduct.
