Tom Pidcock and Zoe Backstedt are set to lead Great Britain’s cycling team at the 2026 Road World Championships, which will take place in Montreal from September 20 to 27. The 36-member squad includes athletes competing in elite, under-23, and junior categories across both men’s and women’s events. Among the notable names are Adam Yates, a former Tour de France podium finisher, and Oscar Onley, who recently claimed the white jersey at the Vuelta a España for best young rider. However, reigning men’s road race champion Tadej Pogacar will not defend his title, as he suffered a broken collarbone in a crash during the Vuelta a España and has since ended his season. Pidcock, who recently won a second mountain bike cross-country world title, has shown strong form ahead of the event, securing two top-10 finishes at the Canadian grand prix races in Quebec and Montreal. These races feature terrain similar to what will be seen in the World Championships. The men’s road race course in Montreal includes a circuit that Pidcock previously finished sixth in. Meanwhile, Onley finished sixth overall and won the best young rider classification at the Vuelta, while Yates won the GP Montreal in 2023. National road race champion Fred Wright and national time trial champion Ethan Hayter will compete in both the road race and time trial, having each taken second place in the Vuelta’s two time trials. Callum Thornley will also compete in both events. Zoe Backstedt leads the elite women’s squad after a breakout season with seven victories, and she will make the transition to senior level in Montreal, where she is considered a favorite for the road race. Anna Morris, a multiple world champion in track cycling, will compete in her debut road world championships, focusing on the time trial. Other notable names in the women’s squad include Olympic time-trial silver medallist Anna Henderson, Pfeiffer Georgi, Lauren Dickson, Josie Nelson, and Flora Perkins. The women’s under-23 squad is led by Cat Ferguson, who returns to competition after a season affected by injuries, while Ben Wiggins, son of Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, will compete in both the under-23 time trial and road race.
