Physiotherapists in France have been granted new authority to prescribe certain medications and medical equipment, as outlined in a recent decree published in the Official Journal on September 16. This change marks a significant shift in the role of physiotherapists, who are now allowed to prescribe muscle relaxants, mild pain relievers such as paracetamol, and anti-inflammatory drugs. They can also prescribe nearly sixty types of medical devices, including splints, lumbar support belts, cervical collars, crutches, bandages, and even condoms. This expansion of responsibilities is intended to make patient care more efficient and accessible. The update comes after years of advocacy by the physiotherapy profession, which has long argued for greater autonomy in treating patients. Elise Bardoult, president of the National Federation of Physiotherapy Students, emphasized that this change will help patients save time by eliminating the need to visit multiple healthcare providers for prescriptions. For example, a patient with an ankle sprain could now receive both treatment and necessary prescriptions directly from a physiotherapist, without needing a prior visit to a doctor. This new authority is expected to streamline the healthcare process, particularly in cases where immediate treatment is needed. Physiotherapists will now be able to provide more comprehensive care, addressing both the physical therapy and the medical needs of their patients in a single visit. This development aligns with broader efforts in France to improve the efficiency of the healthcare system and reduce the burden on doctors and other specialists.
