A new animated film based on the Naruto franchise is set to be officially announced during a panel at the New York Comic Con on October 10, according to Variety. This marks a long-awaited return for the popular series, which has faced criticism in recent years for its handling of sequels and spin-offs since the original manga by Masashi Kishimoto concluded in 2014. Fans have expressed disappointment over the quality of some later projects, including The Boruto: Naruto the Movie, which was released shortly after the manga’s end and was described as a "paper-thin sequel" that failed to match the depth and quality of the original series. The Naruto franchise also experienced delays in its 20th-anniversary celebration, which included four special episodes. These episodes were initially expected to air in September 2023 but were postponed without clear explanation. They were first teased in a tribute video titled "Road of Naruto," which highlighted the series’ legacy and future. The delay has led to speculation that the project might have been reworked into a feature film instead of being released as episodes. Studio Pierrot, the animation studio behind Naruto, will be represented at the New York Comic Con by its executive producer, Yoshihiko Tominaga, as well as the original Japanese voice actors of the main characters, Junko Takeuchi (Naruto) and Noriaki Sugiyama (Sasuke). Their presence confirms that a major announcement is being prepared, raising anticipation among fans. This new film is seen as a chance for the Naruto franchise to address past issues and regain its position as a leading force in the shōnen genre, which focuses on stories of young protagonists facing challenges and growing stronger. The success of this new film will largely depend on Studio Pierrot’s ability to deliver the same level of visual and technical innovation that marked the return of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, another popular shōnen series. If the studio can meet these expectations, the Naruto film could help revive the franchise and rekindle the excitement that once made it a global phenomenon.
