There was an expectation that The Last of Us, the popular HBO series based on the acclaimed video game, would take some time to reach its conclusion. However, recent developments suggest that the series might end sooner than many fans anticipated. According to reports, the show could wrap up with a third season, which is currently planned to air in 2027. Casey Bloys, the head of HBO, confirmed during an interview with Deadline that the third season is still on track for 2027, though no specific release date has been set yet. The potential end of the series comes with a twist. Craig Mazin, the showrunner, had previously planned the third season as the final chapter of the story. However, in an interview with Collider in May 2025, Mazin suggested that completing the full narrative—especially the story of The Last of Us Part II—might require more than just one additional season. At the time, he indicated that a fourth season might be necessary to fully adapt the game’s second installment, which includes new characters, complex storylines, and a significant shift in perspective. Despite this earlier plan, the current strategy seems to have shifted. The third season is expected to continue the story from where the second season left off, with Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, playing a central role. However, there are concerns about how much of The Last of Us Part II can be condensed into just a few episodes. While HBO has not officially confirmed any changes to the original plan, the evolving timeline leaves some uncertainty about how the series will conclude. For now, fans can look forward to the third season, which is still scheduled for release in 2027. If this is indeed the final season, it will mark the end of the series and leave the remainder of the story to be experienced through the video game. While this may be disappointing for some, it also means that the adaptation will remain faithful to the source material, offering fans a complete narrative across both mediums.
