The European Union (EU) ambassador to Canada, Geneviève Tuts, has announced that Brussels is working on a new partnership with Ottawa, which would represent a significant shift from their current relationship. This partnership would be formalized through agreements covering key areas such as trade, security, supply chains, and the management of critical raw materials. According to Bloomberg, the goal of this transatlantic alliance is to counterbalance the influence of major global powers like the United States and China. While the EU and Canada aim to strengthen their ties, Canada will not become a full member of the EU, staying within legal boundaries. The two nations have already signed a security and defense agreement and are bound by the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), a robust trade deal that has helped increase economic cooperation. The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, is expected to outline the general framework of this new partnership during a speech on September 16 in Strasbourg, in the presence of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. According to Politico, this initiative has received support from a broad range of political leaders, including those who are cautious about not upsetting the U.S. administration, particularly under former President Donald Trump. Sources from a European affairs website reported that the ambassadors of the 27 EU member states discussed this project during a confidential meeting in Brussels on September 9. This growing closeness between Canada and Europe is not a recent development. In early May, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, becoming the first non-European leader to do so. This diplomatic forum includes about forty European countries and aims to foster cooperation and dialogue. In a speech reported by The Guardian, Carney emphasized that Europe should not yield to a more "brutal" global order and instead could serve as a foundation for building a new international system. This statement reflects Canada’s desire to work closely with Europe to shape a more cooperative and stable global landscape. The evolving partnership between Canada and the EU signals a strategic move to enhance mutual influence and collaboration in a complex geopolitical environment.
