A new horror film titled Buddy has become one of the most unexpected successes of the year. The movie follows a group of children who find themselves trapped in a strange, surreal television series hosted by what appears to be a friendly, cuddly unicorn. As the story unfolds, the seemingly innocent host reveals a far more sinister and violent nature. Directed by Casper Kelly, the film features a cast including Keegan-Michael Key, Cristin Milioti, Patton Oswalt, Michael Shannon, Topher Grace, and Clint Howard. Despite its modest $3 million budget, Buddy has earned over $15.9 million at the US box office, marking it as a surprise hit. Buddy premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and was released in US cinemas on August 28 through Roadside Attractions and Saban Films. Its unique blend of surreal comedy and horror has drawn comparisons to other unconventional horror films, with some viewers likening it to Happy Tree Friends, Don't Hug Me I'm Scared, and even Barney. The film has been praised by fans who call it "better than Obsession and The Backrooms," both of which gained popularity after initially being seen as niche or obscure. The marketing for Buddy has sparked some confusion, as the image of a cuddly orange unicorn led some parents to mistakenly believe the film was suitable for children. While there have been no confirmed cases of families taking young children to see it, the visual style and title could easily create that impression. This has led to some discussion about the film's genre and the potential for unintended audience overlap. Despite its success in the US, UK horror fans are still waiting for a wider release. The film was shown at FrightFest in August, with both screenings selling out, but no UK distributor has been announced yet. Some fans are hopeful that the film's popularity in the US, especially as Halloween approaches, might finally lead to a UK release. Until then, many are left waiting for a chance to experience Buddy themselves.
