Hooker Jack Singleton, a rugby player who suffered a heart attack a year ago during training with Gloucester, is hoping to return to full training in the coming weeks and resume his rugby career. Singleton, 29, experienced the incident in September 2025 while playing for Gloucester in a Prem Cup match. He described the symptoms as dizziness and an aching arm, but he did not collapse. Since then, he has not played rugby and was later diagnosed with a hereditary condition known as LPA, which causes high levels of LDL cholesterol, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol, and can lead to blockages in the arteries. Singleton revealed that his father passed away at the age of 56 from a heart attack, suggesting a possible genetic link to his condition. He has been receiving treatment at Gloucester Royal and St George's Hospital in London, and is managing his health with medication, as diet and exercise alone are not sufficient for his condition. Singleton noted that while there are high-profile examples of footballers like Christian Eriksen, Daley Blind, and Tom Lockyer returning to top-level sports after cardiac incidents, such cases are much rarer in rugby. During the past year, he struggled with uncertainty and found it difficult to locate information about others with the same condition. However, he is now being treated by the same cardiologists who care for athletes like Eriksen, which gives him confidence in his medical care. Singleton has played 75 games for Gloucester since joining the club in 2020 and has earned seven caps for the England national team, with his most recent appearance in 2022. He was aware that his club contract would expire by June and had been in discussions with Gloucester about the 2026-27 season. The club was open with him about the need to sign a replacement if he could not return to play by May or August. Around the same time Singleton was consulting with cardiologists about his potential return, Gloucester confirmed the recruitment of Wales hooker Dewi Lake for the 2026-27 season. Singleton emphasized that he now has a better understanding of his condition and is in a stronger position than he was a year ago. He has a rolling contract with Gloucester that extends through June, allowing him to continue his rehabilitation. While he hopes to return to full contact training soon, he will not be part of Gloucester's squad for the upcoming season and is seeking another team to offer him a chance to play. For now, he is focusing solely on his recovery and will address other concerns as they arise.
