Shameless star Emmy Rossum has spoken about how playing Fiona Gallagher on the US version of the Channel 4 drama Shameless influenced her personal life. Rossum portrayed the character for nine seasons and was often required to perform nude scenes, which led to people confusing her with her character. She described the experience as "absolutely wild," highlighting how the role impacted her relationships and public perception. Rossum discussed these challenges on the Sept. 16 episode of the podcast Pretty Tough, where she was joined by tennis star Maria Sharapova. She explained that the nudity in Shameless made it difficult for her to form personal relationships, as men she dated often had preconceived ideas about her based on her role. One example involved a man with political ambitions who worried that her role might affect his career. Rossum is currently married to Mr Robot creator Sam Esmail, and the couple has two children together. She described their relationship as being centered around family, with both partners supporting each other's careers. Despite the challenges she faced in her dating life due to her role in Shameless, she has found a stable and supportive partnership with Esmail. Rossum is now starring in the Disney Plus thriller Furious, where she plays Alice Black, an FBI agent investigating a female serial killer. She said she was looking for a character as complex and dynamic as Fiona Gallagher, and she found that in Furious five years after Shameless concluded. Furious is currently available to stream on Disney Plus in the UK.
