Relations at a low point

The ambassador of Israel to France, Joshua Zarka, stated that relations between the two countries are at a "very low" level but are beginning to improve. This assessment was made during an interview with Le Parisien, days before Israeli legislative elections that could end the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Macron’s criticism a key issue

The tension is attributed to statements made by French President Emmanuel Macron, who frequently criticizes the Israeli military for "violations" of international law in regions like Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank. A particular point of contention was Macron's speech at the United Nations in September 2023, where he condemned the situation in Gaza as "shameful" and criticized the lack of humanitarian aid.

Israeli response to Macron’s speech

Israeli authorities were angered by Macron’s remarks, particularly his reference to a "pretended peace" that has not allowed aid to reach the Palestinian enclave. Zarka described these comments as "incomprehensible coming from a leader who claims to be a friend of Israel," adding that many Israelis view France as being filled with antisemites, which complicates his efforts to improve relations.

Improvement in relations

Despite the tensions, Zarka noted that both countries have shown a recent willingness to resume ties. He stated that there is a "willingness from both sides to try to resume relations" and that the two nations are "beginning to climb back up" from the low point. He also emphasized that President Macron does not have any hostility toward Israel.
