Merlier and Magnier could ride together in 2027

Tim Merlier, a veteran sprinter with 14 victories in 2026, suggested that he and Paul Magnier, a younger teammate with 15 victories in the same year, might compete together in the 2027 Tour de France. Merlier said it was not impossible, though he noted the probability of it happening was low.

Soudal-Quick Step's strategy

Soudal-Quick Step, Merlier’s team, currently splits its sprinters to maximize success, with Merlier and Magnier competing in different races. However, Merlier indicated that this approach might change in 2027, depending on the Tour de France route and team strategy.

Merlier's experience and Magnier's potential

Merlier, who will be 34 in 2027, has won three stages in this year’s Tour de France and plans to stay with the team until 2028. Magnier, 22, has already won 39 races, though many were in less prestigious events, and his contract with the team runs until 2029.

Tour de France route and sprint opportunities

The 2027 Tour de France route includes several sprint-friendly stages, including one in Great Britain, which Merlier hopes will allow him to win the yellow jersey. He noted that the overall route would be challenging, with significant elevation gains, but the sprint stages could still provide opportunities.

Team decision pending

Merlier emphasized that the final decision about whether one or two sprinters will compete in the Tour de France rests with Soudal-Quick Step. The team will evaluate the route and determine the best strategy for maximizing their chances of success.
