Fenerbahce's head coach, Ismail Kartal, stunned fans and media by announcing his resignation immediately after a 1-1 draw with Roma in the Champions League on Thursday. The match took place at Fenerbahce's home ground, and the result ended in a stalemate despite a strong performance from the Turkish team. However, just minutes after Kartal's surprising exit statement, the club's president, Aziz Yildrim, clarified that the coach would continue in his role. Kartal had shocked the post-match press conference by saying he was leaving Fenerbahce “never to return,” stating that he wanted to “clear the way for the club.” Yildrim downplayed Kartal’s remarks, insisting that the coach would remain with the club. He also mentioned that some fans had thrown a bottle at Kartal during the match, which had upset the coach. Yildrim added that Kartal had expressed frustration over the pressure he faced. When asked if Kartal had confirmed he would stay, Yildrim said, “There’s no need for him to say that he’d continue. I am his senior, I told him to continue and that’s it. We are a family.” Kartal has a long and storied history with Fenerbahce. He played for the club for a decade and has served as a coach multiple times, including a full season in 2023-24 after brief stints in 2014-15 and 2021-22. He was also an assistant manager when the team won the Turkish title twice. Despite his experience, Fenerbahce has struggled to win the Turkish Super Lig in recent years, finishing second in the past five seasons. This season, they made it to the Champions League group stage for the first time in 18 years, but they currently sit ninth in the league after a difficult start to the season. The match against Roma was a tightly contested affair. Roma took the lead in the 39th minute when Bryan Cristante scored after a pass from Donyell Malen. Fenerbahce equalized just before halftime through Archie Brown, who scored after a pass from Mason Greenwood. Roma had a penalty called in the 68th minute, but a VAR review determined that the foul had occurred outside the penalty area. Fenerbahce had the best chance to win the match late on when Nathan Aké headed a shot against the crossbar. Whether Kartal will still be in charge for Fenerbahce’s upcoming matches, including games against Aston Villa and Liverpool, remains uncertain.
