New parking plan announced

Mayor Catherine Trautmann of Strasbourg outlined plans for a second "Act for purchasing power" during a press conference on October 27. The initiative includes free parking for the first thirty minutes of each day in the city center, set to begin on January 4, 2027.

Cost and parking rates

The parking measure is expected to cost 500,000 euros annually and will be paired with more reasonable and progressive parking rates. The city will also introduce 39 new violet parking spaces, where the first hour costs one euro, spread across five zones on the Grande Île and surrounding areas.

Basketball center acquisition

The municipal council meeting on November 2 will also consider acquiring a basketball center in the Meinau neighborhood from the Grand Est Region for five million euros. The facility includes three basketball courts and a climbing wall and is viewed as a key sports structure for Strasbourg and the Alsatian region.

Funding for the basketball center

The Grand Est Region plans to sell the land to the city for a symbolic euro and will contribute 500,000 euros to the project. The Alsace European Community is expected to add an additional one million euros in 2027.

Subsidies for religious and educational institutions

The council will also approve subsidies for several religious institutions and associations, including Notre Dame de Lourdes and Saint Amand parishes, the CRIF, the National School of Hospital Chaplains, and the Koenigshoffen Mosque Association. The city will provide over 6.5 million euros in financial assistance to private educational institutions under an association contract.

Opposition concerns and proposals

The opposition group Union of the Center, Right, and Civil Society has raised several questions, including improving security around a bicycle track in Rotterdam Park, clarifying the location of the Saint-Jean fair, and requesting support for businesses affected by demonstrations on October 17 and 24.

Criticism of traffic changes and policy proposals

The Strasbourg Juste et Vivante group has criticized changes in traffic and parking in Cronenbourg, particularly the return to two-way traffic on Mittelhausbergen Road, which they argue increases danger. The group also proposed a motion for the city to commit to feminist policies, including gender-sensitive budgeting and inclusive writing.

Proposals from Strasbourg Insoumise

The Strasbourg Insoumise group will propose opening community halls for high school student mobilizations and will question the city on the eviction of occupants from the Krimmeri camp and the fight against racist and Islamophobic hatred.
