A romantic comedy has opened in London, following successful runs in New York and Los Angeles. The play, set at Table 17, tells the story of Jada, an air steward played by Marisha Wallace, and Dallas, an aspiring music producer portrayed by Jamael Westman, as they confront unresolved issues from their past. The narrative alternates between the present and the past, much like the play Constellations by Nick Payne, offering a layered look at their relationship over time. Critics have noted that the play attempts to blend humor with deeper emotional themes related to love and relationships. However, some have suggested it lacks the emotional depth found in similar productions, such as Shifters by Benedict Lombe. Despite this, the production is enriched with music from Chaka Khan and nostalgic 90s hits, adding a warm, familiar soundtrack to the story. The stage design features a rotating horseshoe-shaped banquette, created by set designer Amy Jane Cook, and sharp lighting by Matt Haskins that enhances the play's emotional tone. The production also includes theatrical elements such as quick costume changes and moments where the actors address the audience directly, especially during more emotionally complex scenes. Michael Rishawn plays multiple supporting roles, including a gay restaurant host with a backstory of being single and unwelcome in certain social circles. The lead actors, Marisha Wallace and Jamael Westman, deliver energetic and heartfelt performances, portraying their characters with both sensitivity and charm. The play is currently running at the Kiln Theatre in London and will continue until October 24.
