A cybercriminal group known as ShinyHunters has claimed to have breached the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and stolen sensitive data on thousands of FBI agents and job applicants. The group made the claim on a dark web site, where they reportedly posted information they say includes "sensitive data on almost all FBI agents and individuals who filed an application with the FBI for a job." The breach was first reported by 404 Media, an independent news outlet, after it received a sample of stolen data, including names, home addresses, and phone numbers of FBI agents and their spouses. The outlet verified some of this data against public records, confirming its authenticity.
According to ShinyHunters, their motivation for the breach was not financial. Instead, they are demanding that the FBI remove a report they claim contains false allegations about the group. The hackers said they accessed an Oracle PeopleSoft server, commonly used by human resources departments to store job applicants' information, and then moved to breach an Amazon-hosted government cloud that stores data on FBI agents and applicants. While they stated they took terabytes of data, they have not specified what they plan to do with it if the FBI does not remove the report.
The stolen data could pose a serious counterintelligence risk. If exploited, it could be used by foreign actors or hackers to coerce or extort FBI agents and their families into cooperating with foreign governments. The hackers also reportedly defaced the FBI's jobs site, which was marked as "currently down for maintenance" at the time of the report. The FBI's special agent applicant portal was also down, though the agency did not respond to requests for comment about the breach.
This is the second known breach of an FBI system this year. Earlier in the year, unidentified hackers accessed a system used by the FBI for managing real-time wiretaps and foreign intelligence-gathering warrants, which could have exposed surveillance targets. Separately, FBI Director Kash Patel had his personal email account hacked and leaked by a group linked to Iran, Handala, in retaliation for U.S.-led strikes against Iran.
