Severe coastal erosion has raised concerns in Malibu, prompting officials to issue a warning about hazardous beach conditions after a late-summer storm damaged several shoreline properties. Among the affected areas is a mansion once owned by actor Nicolas Cage. In a recent public update, the city highlighted dangerous conditions at Point Dume State Beach, particularly near the end of Westward Beach Road. The erosion has exposed pilings, concrete, and steel structures in the sand and water, along with steep sand cliffs. These conditions leave little to no sandy area for walking except during low tide. Although the road to the Point Dume State Beach parking lot remains closed, the beach itself is not closed to the public. Visitors are being urged to exercise caution, avoid exposed structures and debris, follow posted closures, and consult with lifeguards about current conditions. The city is still recovering from an unusually strong late-summer storm that hit earlier this month. The storm caused significant damage along the coastline, including a sinkhole near Cage’s former beachfront home. The driveway in front of the house collapsed Tuesday morning, creating a large hole and resulting in a gas leak just before 6 a.m. Emergency responders and utility workers were called to the scene, and SoCalGas reported the leak was under control within several hours. As a precaution, the utility temporarily shut off natural gas service along an 85-foot (26-meter) section of the street to prevent further risk due to coastal erosion. Representatives for Nicolas Cage did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Property records show that the estate was sold in 2024, and during the sale, the former owner told the New York Times that Cage was the buyer. The property sustained damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area, linked to the lingering effects of Hurricane Marie, which had weakened to a tropical storm. Although Marie did not make landfall, it brought heavy rainfall and generated dangerous waves along the Southern California coastline during the holiday weekend. Malibu officials reportedly barred entry to five homes on the street Tuesday, according to a city statement. The private neighborhood lies between the ocean and the Pacific Coast Highway. Nicolas Cage, 62, recently appeared in the Amazon series Spider-Noir and is set to portray NFL coach and commentator John Madden in a biographical film releasing later this year. The actor has appeared in over 100 films and won an Academy Award for Leaving Las Vegas. His recent projects and public appearances continue to keep him in the spotlight, even as the Malibu community deals with the aftermath of the coastal storm and ongoing erosion issues.
