Protest in Toulouse over living costs

Street medics reported increased repression during a large-scale demonstration in Toulouse on October 24, 2026, as they provided first aid to injured demonstrators protesting against the high cost of living. Unions estimated around 80,000 people participated, while the local government estimated the number at 26,500.

Pink Medics' role in the protest

The Pink Medics, an informal group of about 30 people in Toulouse, were present and provided aid to injured individuals, including a young man seriously injured by a grenade. The group, founded four years ago and supported by the environmental group Extinction Rebellion, has previously intervened during major demonstrations, such as those against infrastructure projects like the A69 highway and the Bordeaux-Toulouse high-speed rail line.

Legal challenges for Pink Medics

The Pink Medics operate without legal status to intervene in demonstrations, and their equipment, including masks and helmets, can be seized by law enforcement despite their first aider credentials. They are increasingly seen by police as supporters of "breakers" and are sometimes targeted by tear gas or grenade shots.

Incidents of violence against medics

According to a report by the Toulouse Observatory of Police Practices, in conjunction with the League for Human Rights, a team of volunteer first responders was beaten by CRS (French riot police) and targeted by the launch of an explosive grenade GL304, despite posing no threat. This incident highlights the risks faced by medics during such demonstrations.

Medical interventions during the protest

During the demonstration, the Pink Medics performed multiple interventions, primarily for decontamination related to tear gas. One medic applied physiological serum to a person to calm irritation, while others formed a circle to secure the intervention and remained impassive despite the gas and projectiles.

Injury and treatment of a demonstrator

A 20-year-old demonstrator had several fingers torn off by an explosive grenade and was treated by the medics before being evacuated by firefighters. The medics used a homemade spray, a mixture of water and antacid, to treat intoxicated demonstrators. Despite the risks, the medics emphasized that their goal is to provide aid without seeking special treatment.
