The Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region has unveiled a 10.5 million euro action plan to assist businesses impacted by the Saumos fire in Gironde and to support the recovery of the forest affected by the blaze that started on July 22. The fire, which occurred on August 1, burned over 42,000 hectares of land and had a major effect on the local economy. Alain Rousset, president of the region, outlined the plan, which includes 14 measures and three requests directed to the national government.
One of the key components of the plan is a "rebound loan" program designed to help businesses manage their cash flow. These loans range from 5,000 to 50,000 euros and are intended to provide temporary financial relief. The region is also expanding its guarantee fund, which is currently valued at 6 million euros, to increase the percentage of bank credit guarantees from 70 to 80 percent. This change aims to make it easier for small and medium-sized enterprises to secure loans, with eligible businesses receiving aid up to 15,000 euros.
In addition to financial support, the region is working to assist the wood industry by seeking storage platforms to manage the flow of damaged wood into the market. The Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region has also asked the European Union to allocate an additional 4.2 million euros to the DFCI (Forest Fire Defense) budget for field operations. The region plans to conduct experiments to restore bocage forests—traditional wooded landscapes in rural France—by removing pine trees at the forest edges and creating buffer zones to prevent future fires.
To further aid the local economy, the region will continue supporting the tourism sector through national and international promotional campaigns. President Alain Rousset has also made three specific requests to the government: the creation of a permanent operational base for water bombers in the Southwest to fight fires more effectively, a commitment to a major water management strategy, and the implementation of a new decentralization policy to better adapt to the challenges of climate change.
