In a day filled with unexpected results at the ongoing tennis tournament, several high-profile players faced early exits. Among them were former US Open finalists Taylor Fritz, Amanda Anisimova, and Madison Keys, all of whom lost in the third round on Saturday. Keys, a 2017 US Open finalist, suffered a dramatic defeat to Qinwen Zheng, who is currently ranked world No. 121. Zheng had previously undergone elbow surgery and had to qualify for the main draw, but she overcame Keys in a tightly contested match that lasted three sets. Keys led 5-0 in the final set and had a match point on her serve at 5-1, but failed to convert it, allowing Zheng to rally and win. Zheng credited her perseverance and hard work for the victory, saying, "I’m just telling myself keep holding every single point, never give up, stay there and somehow little by little it just happened." Amanda Anisimova, the 10th seed and last year’s runner-up, also faced a tough loss. She fell to 24th seed Anastasia Potapova, who was born in Russia but now represents Austria. Anisimova, who has been working her way back to form after a wrist injury, struggled to convert break points and lost 6-2, 7-5. This marked the third consecutive Grand Slam tournament where Anisimova was eliminated in the third round. Potapova, meanwhile, reached her best result at a major tournament, equaling her personal best. Taylor Fritz, the 2024 finalist, faced a five-set battle against 24th seed Francisco Cerundolo. Fritz had chances to close out the match but failed to convert three break points in the final set. Cerundolo, playing his first match on the prestigious Arthur Ashe Stadium, showed remarkable composure to win from two sets down for only the second time in his career. He said, "In the third I started to get into it, step by step, and in the fourth and fifth I played really good tennis. Taylor is a top player, he’s played in the final here, so winning, my first time on Arthur Ashe, it’s fantastic." The day of surprises also saw French Open finalist Flavio Cobolli, the fifth seed, fall to 28th seed Alexander Blockx from Belgium. Blockx, who had never previously reached the last 16 of a major tournament, defeated Cobolli in a four-set match. The result marked a significant breakthrough for Blockx, who will now advance to the next stage of the competition.
