Student protests in the Ariège department have resulted in the temporary closure of three high schools, with in-person classes suspended and remote learning introduced. The Gabriel-Fauré high school in Foix, the Jean-Durroux high school in Ferrières-sur-Ariège, and the Pyrène high school in Pamiers are all closed and will transition to remote classes starting Tuesday, October 6. The Gabriel-Fauré high school in Foix closed on Monday evening and will not reopen on Tuesday. In-person classes have been suspended, and the boarding facility is also not accepting students. This decision was made following another day of protests in front of the school on Monday, October 5, which led the administration to keep the school closed. In a letter to parents, principal Nicolas Solana explained that security concerns around the school site were the reason for the closure. Protests also occurred in front of the Gabriel-Fauré, Jean-Durroux, and Pyrène high schools, as well as in Saint-Girons, and were marked by clashes with law enforcement. These demonstrations were supported by the CGT, a labor union that encourages people to join the students in a planned protest on Tuesday, October 6, in Pamiers. In response to the ongoing protests, the rectorate of the Toulouse academy has decided to close these three schools in Ariège and ensure continued education through remote learning. The Jean-Durroux high school in Ferrières-sur-Ariège and the Pyrène high school in Pamiers are now joining the Gabriel-Fauré high school in Foix in this measure. As a result, students are no longer being allowed on campus at these three high schools. For Ariège, this marks a new phase in student mobilization, as the department had previously avoided school closures. It now joins other regions like Haute-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot, and Hérault, where some schools had already switched to remote learning as early as last week. No reopening date has yet been announced, and further instructions will be provided through the school’s ENT system, which is a digital platform used for educational communication and management.
