A nurse at a care home in Gloucestershire has been removed from the professional register after a tribunal found her guilty of misconduct, including making inappropriate remarks about a resident with dementia. Rossitsa Petkova, a registered nurse with over ten years of experience at Castleford House Nursing Home in Chepstow, was banned from the profession by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) following a hearing. The tribunal found eight allegations against her proven, including comments about not providing a birthday cake to a resident, shouting at residents, and making dismissive remarks about their care.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that Ms Petkova suggested to a colleague that the staff could eat a birthday cake themselves, arguing that the resident wouldn’t remember the occasion due to dementia. Another allegation involved her telling a resident that their daughter would not visit if they didn’t finish their dinner. She also reportedly informed a resident who had dropped a beaker that it was their own fault. In another incident, she allegedly yelled at a colleague for serving marmalade on toast to a resident.
Ms Petkova denied all the allegations, claiming that colleagues had made baseless and childish complaints against her. However, evidence from a kitchen assistant named Melanie Corfield was presented, detailing a conversation in which Ms Petkova suggested the cake could be eaten by staff instead of being given to the resident. Ms Petkova denied making such comments, but the tribunal found her remarks to be in line with the evidence.
The NMC panel emphasized that the residents involved were elderly and vulnerable, and that Ms Petkova had shown a dismissive attitude toward the regulatory body and toward clinical and caring responsibilities. The tribunal concluded that her behavior demonstrated a deep-seated lack of remorse or insight and was fundamentally incompatible with her continuing as a registered nurse. The panel stated that her actions would damage public confidence in the profession and the regulatory body. Ms Petkova retains the right to appeal the decision.
