Novel explores everyday miracles

The Street Machikado, a novel by Saki Murayama, was published in Japan in 2024 and in France in 2026 by Le lotus et l'éléphant editions, with a translation by Angélique Mariet. The book consists of five interconnected stories that explore themes of happiness, dreams, and hidden miracles in everyday life.

Stories share common elements

Each story shares common elements such as magic, cats, books, love, and friendship. The narratives often involve characters experiencing transformative encounters, past reunions, or connections beyond normal dimensions.

One story follows a heartbroken man

One story follows Jun, a young man on a rainy Christmas Eve, whose heart is broken by the upcoming marriage of the woman he secretly loves. As he descends a slippery stone staircase, he injures himself and later finds solace in a cake from an old couple of bakers and a stray cat near his home. This encounter leads to a miracle that helps him move forward despite his disappointment.

Another story centers on a girl and her family

Another story centers on Chiyoko, a girl whose family faces financial difficulties, risking the closure of their restaurant. Her grandfather, an orphan of war, opened the restaurant after the war with the help of his younger sister. Chiyoko reflects on her ancestor's unfulfilled dream of becoming a manga artist. A small living being, Chiiko the cat, appears to bridge the past and present, offering a sense of connection and possibility.

A third story follows a reclusive writer

A third story follows Sayaka, a mystery novelist who celebrates her birthday every four years on February 29th. Living in a dark, damp apartment with her cat Tanpopo, she isolates herself from the world. However, she remembers a childhood promise to visit the Bridge of Leap Years on this unique day, where she might meet someone she wishes to see. This place becomes a symbol of hope and connection across dimensions.

A quiet boy discovers wartime stories

Kentarô, a quiet and sensitive boy, spends his summer vacation in the countryside, where he discovers a hidden spot filled with wartime stories. He forms a bond with the ghost of a boy from that era, helping to realize their shared dream. Despite his efforts to be more outgoing, Kentarô finds comfort in his quiet nature and the stories that surround him.

A writer and a stray cat bring back memories

In another story, Miyuki, a writer, takes in an injured stray cat, reminding her of a cat she tried to save as a child with her best friend Mitsuki. The two friends drift apart over the years, but Miyuki's wish for a jinmensô—a face that appears on her right knee—brings unexpected miracles. She recalls making wishes to the stars with Mitsuki, and the story explores the enduring bond between them.
