E.Leclerc has retained its position as the most affordable supermarket chain in France for September, according to a monthly ranking by the consumer organization Que Choisir. The ranking compares 4,500 supermarkets and hypermarkets that offer drive-thru services and carry the full range of products available in their stores. E.Leclerc is known for aggressively advertising its low prices and remains the most cost-effective option for both national brand and private-label products. Coopérative U and Intermarché are neck-and-neck for second place in the rankings. Both chains saw slight price increases in September, with Coopérative U raising prices by 3.1% and Intermarché by 3.2%. However, when looking at medium-sized stores, the rankings flipped slightly in favor of Intermarché, which had a 5.2% increase compared to Super U’s 5.6% increase. Carrefour hypermarkets and Auchan are notably more expensive than the leading chains. Carrefour hypermarkets saw a 6.2% rise in prices, while Auchan is the most expensive supermarket chain in France, with a 14.1% increase. For a typical shopping basket worth 150 euros, customers at Auchan spend around 20 euros more than those shopping at E.Leclerc. Discount supermarket chains like Lidl are not included in the monthly rankings because they typically do not offer drive-thru services and have a more limited selection of national brand products. However, a survey conducted in February 2025 found that Lidl was the cheapest supermarket chain in France at the time, beating E.Leclerc by 2.5%. Its competitor, Aldi, had average prices that were 4.5% higher than Lidl’s.
