Gabriel Serville, the president of the Guyane territorial collectivity, died on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the age of 67. He had been hospitalized at the CHU de Cayenne since Sunday, following a prolonged illness. The Guyane territorial collectivity (CTG) expressed its grief, saying, "Beyond the elected official, it is a man deeply attached to Guyane, its inhabitants, and its future that our territory is losing today." Serville had a long career in education before entering politics, serving as a mathematics professor and later as a school principal. He held various political roles, including member of the regional council, mayor of Matoury, and member of parliament for Guyane’s first constituency from 2012 to 2021. In July 2021, he was elected president of the territorial collectivity, a position he held until his health declined. Serville had been hospitalized in Metropolitan France since November 2024, where he publicly discussed his battle with stomach cancer. Despite his illness, he returned to his political duties in the summer of 2025. During his time in parliament, he was part of the Democratic and Republican Left (GDR) group, which included communist and overseas representatives. He was known for his work on issues such as combating illegal gold mining and addressing anti-LGBT discrimination in overseas territories. The CTG confirmed that Serville passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, surrounded by his family. His death marks the loss of a prominent figure who had dedicated his life to the development and well-being of Guyane.
