Google has updated its Google Wallet app, removing the horizontal display of credit cards that was previously shown on the home screen. Instead, users now see a full card and the edge of a second card arranged vertically. A quick tap or swipe down opens a full-screen view that shows most of each card, making it easier for users to select the right card for contactless payments. This change follows a major app update at the beginning of the year and the introduction of a new search system later in the same period.
Transport, loyalty, and other types of cards remain accessible from the main screen, just as before. The updated interface was first noticed among a small group of users and is now visible on Pixel devices used by the Android Authority team, suggesting that the change is being rolled out more widely. However, as of now, the update has not appeared on devices in France.
Compared to Apple's Wallet app, which also displays cards in a vertical list, Google’s new format shows a larger portion of each card’s visual design. This layout is particularly useful for users with multiple registered cards, as it eliminates the need to scroll through a carousel to find the right one. It also better suits one-handed use, especially if frequently used cards are placed at the bottom of the list.
The change is implemented on the server side, meaning it appears automatically without requiring users to manually update the app. However, the update is not rolling out simultaneously across all devices. Google has not provided a specific date for when the feature will be available to all users. The "Manage Payment Methods" menu, located at the bottom of the screen, allows users to reorganize their cards and set a default card. A gear-shaped icon in the top right corner gives access to card details and transaction history.
