A 38-year-old woman, Shalini Thakur, was shot and killed in the street by a 22-year-old man, Rohit Rohit, outside a Panera Bread restaurant in Sacramento on September 8. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, Rohit arrived at the scene before Thakur and confronted her. As she tried to run away, he shot her multiple times. After she fell, he shot her in the head. Thakur was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities used a tracking system called Flock to locate Rohit’s car. When deputies tried to stop him, the driver slammed on the brakes. After several attempts to contact Rohit, deputies found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An investigation revealed that Rohit had been stalking and harassing Thakur since January. In January, Thakur discovered an Apple AirTag, a small tracking device, under the hood of her car. In another incident, Rohit deflated the air from her vehicle and followed her to work, claiming he wanted to help. Thakur’s mother, Sudesh Kumari, told ABC 7 News that her daughter had repeatedly reported the harassment to the police. “She could have been saved,” Kumari said. “She told police so many times. She called them, but nobody did anything.” According to the sheriff’s office, Thakur initially chose not to pursue charges or obtain a restraining order, even after Rohit obtained a key to her apartment and entered it while she was asleep. He later claimed he had been concerned about her. In May, authorities encouraged Thakur to seek a restraining order, which she eventually did. However, the sheriff’s office received a report of a restraining order violation on July 29, when Thakur said Rohit left random grocery items at her door. Court documents showed that Rohit and Thakur had met at work, where he picked up DoorDash orders. Rohit entered the U.S. from India in 2023 and was in the country illegally. He was arrested by Border Patrol but released, according to the Department of Homeland Security. An immigration attorney explained that people arriving from faraway countries like India are often released and allowed to go to court, unlike those from closer regions. DoorDash confirmed that Rohit had signed up using a Social Security number and completed background checks, though he had not worked for the company in over six weeks. Video footage of the shooting, released by the sheriff, showed Rohit standing over Thakur’s body with a gun. A funeral for Thakur was held with only her mother and uncle in attendance, as many of her relatives live in India.
