Prize honors teacher Samuel Paty

The Samuel Paty Prize, created by the Association of History and Geography Teachers (APHG), aims to promote democratic values, freedom of expression, and critical thinking among students. Named after Samuel Paty, a teacher who was tragically assassinated in 2020, the prize seeks to keep his legacy alive through educational initiatives.

Annual theme focuses on democracy

This year’s theme for the Samuel Paty Prize was "Debating to Make Democracy Thrive!" Nearly 170 classes across various levels participated in the initiative, engaging in discussions and creative projects centered around democratic principles and civic engagement.

Ceremony held at Sorbonne

The award ceremony took place on October 17 in the large auditorium of the Sorbonne, a prestigious university in Paris. The event celebrated the efforts of students and their teachers while honoring the memory of Samuel Paty, whose life and work continue to inspire educational programs focused on democracy and critical thinking.

Nine projects recognized in three categories

A total of nine projects were awarded, with three winners in each category: elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Students were encouraged to create collective works such as comic strips, posters, videos, short films, or digital creations, allowing them to explore democratic themes through diverse formats.

New theme for upcoming edition

The sixth edition of the Samuel Paty Prize is already underway, with the new theme focusing on "Information and Opinions in Our Democracy Today." Registration for this edition is open until January 15, 2027, inviting students to continue engaging with democratic values through creative and critical projects.
