Paul Scholes, a former Manchester United legend and current football analyst, has stated that only Arsenal and Manchester City have the realistic chance of winning the Premier League this season. He has ruled out both Chelsea and Manchester United as serious title contenders, citing a lack of consistency and key player departures as major hurdles. Scholes pointed to the recent performance of Chelsea, who lost 2-1 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, as a sign that they are not yet in the title race. Meanwhile, United, despite a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town, have struggled defensively and Scholes believes they are unlikely to challenge for the top spot. Scholes emphasized that both Arsenal and Manchester City have won all three of their opening Premier League games, giving them a head start in the title race. He criticized Chelsea for losing their key midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, to Manchester City, and noted the absence of Caicedo, who is still recovering from injury. Scholes observed that Chelsea has been forced to rely on full-backs in midfield, with players like Reece James and Gusto not being reliable long-term solutions. He acknowledged that while Chelsea could have prevented the transfer of Fernandez, they chose not to, and praised them for keeping their word despite the potential short-term impact on their team. Regarding Manchester United, Scholes believes they will secure a top-four finish this season but insists they are not in a position to challenge for the title. He highlighted their defensive weaknesses, noting that their back four has not been strong for years and has not been significantly improved. Scholes also suggested that if manager Michael Carrick is still in charge next summer, the club will likely invest in a new defensive line to address these issues. He stressed that while United are working on recruitment, the current squad lacks the quality to compete with Arsenal or City for the league title. Scholes' comments reflect a realistic assessment of the current state of the Premier League, with Arsenal and Manchester City leading the race. He believes that while other teams may have moments of success, only those two clubs have the depth, consistency, and key players to realistically challenge for the title this season.
