A FA Cup qualifying match between Mulbarton Wanderers and Woodford Town will be replayed due to a referee's mistake. The initial match, played on Saturday, saw Mulbarton Wanderers, a team from the Isthmian League North, win 2-1 against Woodford Town, a side from the Essex Senior League. However, Woodford Town lodged a protest with the Football Association after a controversial decision in the 30th minute. During the match, Woodford Town scored a penalty, but the referee ruled the goal invalid, citing encroachment by several Woodford players. As a result, the referee awarded Mulbarton an indirect free-kick. According to Law 14 of the game's rules, the referee should have ordered the penalty to be retaken instead of awarding the free-kick. Initially, the FA stated that protests over rule misapplication were not allowed, but a sub-committee later reviewed the incident and found a technical error by the referee, leading to the decision to replay the match. The replay will take place on Tuesday, 29 September, with Mulbarton hosting the game. The club described the decision as "final and binding," noting that there is no right of appeal. Mulbarton, an eighth-tier team from Norfolk, expressed disappointment, stating the ruling could affect the club and raise concerns about the certainty of results in future FA Cup matches. Woodford Town, a ninth-tier team based in Redbridge, thanked the FA for its review, saying the decision ensures the tie can be concluded according to FA Cup rules. The winners of the replay will face Gloucester City, a team from the Southern League Premier Division South, in the third qualifying round on Saturday, 3 October. Woodford Town had initially expected to travel to Mulbarton and acknowledged the frustration of supporters who had planned around the original fixture. They thanked fans for their patience. This will be the second non-league FA Cup match in recent years to be replayed due to a referee's error, following a similar incident in 2006 and a replay in the FA Vase last season.
