A British man has gone missing after he dove into Italy’s Lake Como in an attempt to rescue a father and his teenage son who were in trouble in the water. The incident happened on Monday around 1:30 pm, when the group was on a rented boat with friends and two children near San Siro, on the western side of the lake. The 45-year-old father and his 16-year-old son swam about 600 meters from the shore and encountered difficulties. A 37-year-old British man then swam toward them to help, but he did not return. According to local news outlet Prima Como, he disappeared beneath the surface of the lake while trying to rescue the pair. An extensive search was launched immediately, involving specialist divers, rescue boats, and a helicopter. However, the British man has not yet been found, and authorities have asked for additional help from expert teams. Meanwhile, the father and son were rescued by a passing boat and were showing early signs of hypothermia, a condition caused by exposure to cold water. The boy’s mother stayed on the boat with her younger child, a 10-year-old, and called emergency services. They were later rescued by the Como Guardia di Finanza unit and taken back to the pier, where they received treatment from paramedics. An investigation is now underway to determine how the incident occurred. Police are checking with the rental agency where the boat was hired. Authorities have brought in support from specialist teams and have requested the assistance of ROVs, or remotely operated vehicles, which use heavy cables to search beneath the surface of the water. Firefighter helicopters, ambulances, and other emergency services have been deployed to help with the ongoing search. Lake Como is known for its deep waters, with depths ranging from 150 meters to 200 meters at its deepest point. This makes search efforts particularly challenging, as the lake's depth and cold temperatures can pose significant risks for divers and rescue teams. The search continues as authorities work to locate the missing man and understand the circumstances that led to the incident.
