The 2026 German Summer Biathlon Championships in Nordic combined were held in Hinterzarten, Germany, on Saturday, following the ski jumping event. Nordic combined is a winter sport that blends ski jumping with cross-country skiing, and the competition took place in a format known as a small hill Gundersen, which involves a ski jump followed by a cross-country skiing race. This format is typically used in lower-level competitions and is named after the Gundersen method, a system that adjusts the cross-country skiing distance based on the jump performance. In the women's category, Nathalie Armbruster emerged as the winner, finishing 7 seconds ahead of Jenny Nowak, who took the silver medal, and Maria Gerboth, who claimed bronze. The race involved a 5 km wheel skiing pursuit, a variation of cross-country skiing that uses a special wheel to simulate the movement of skiing on snow. This event is designed to be accessible to a broader audience and allows participants to compete without the need for traditional snow conditions. In the men's category, Vinzenz Geiger secured the gold medal, outpacing Manuel Faisst in the final sprint. Julian Schmid took the bronze medal, finishing about thirty seconds behind Geiger, ahead of Felix Brieden and Jonathan Graebert. The competition highlighted the skill and endurance required in Nordic combined, as athletes must perform both a ski jump and a cross-country skiing race in a single day. The event in Hinterzarten drew attention from sports enthusiasts and highlighted the growing interest in Nordic combined, a sport that combines the thrill of ski jumping with the endurance of cross-country skiing. As the sport continues to evolve, events like the German Summer Biathlon Championships provide an opportunity for athletes to compete in a modified format that is both challenging and accessible.
