Unreal Gaming PC shows Gran Turismo 7 on PC

A YouTube channel named Unreal Gaming PC posted a video showing Gran Turismo 7 running on a PC without any console connected. The demonstration used a modified version of KytyPS5, an emulator that replicates the PlayStation 5's software environment. The video highlighted the game's car designs, track details, and lighting with few visual issues.

Gran Turismo 7's commercial success

Gran Turismo 7, released in March 2022 for PS4 and PS5, is the final game in a franchise that sold over 100 million copies by June 2025. Neither the Japanese publisher nor the development studio has commented on the emulator's achievement.

Technical setup for the demonstration

The tester used a high-end PC with an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, 64 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card. Despite this powerful setup, the game ran between 17 and 25 images per second, much slower than the 60 images per second on the console. This is due to the emulator translating complex rendering effects in real-time.

Emulation challenges and progress

The emulator must translate shaders, small programs that handle lighting and effects, to work with the PC's graphics card. This causes stutters and instability, which varies depending on the KytyPS5 version and hardware used. However, PS5 emulation has advanced significantly, with some games reaching 60 images per second on PC.

PS5's hardware and future possibilities

The PS5 uses AMD components similar to those found in PCs, making emulation easier compared to the PS3's complex Cell processor. This has sparked speculation about future games like GTA VI being playable on PC through emulation. Meanwhile, some games like Dead Cells are already running natively on Windows without emulation.

Legal and technical hurdles

To use the emulator, users need a decrypted copy of Gran Turismo 7, which requires a "jailbroken" PS5. This is illegal in France under the DADVSI law of 2006. The line between emulation and piracy is unclear, as seen in the Overdrive case, where an illegal game platform was cloned after its closure.

Official ports remain uncertain

Sony has not announced a PC version of Gran Turismo 7, and Rockstar is following a similar approach with GTA VI, which will initially be exclusive to PS5 and Xbox Series. Until emulators improve, PC gamers may need to rely on consoles for the latest titles.
