OpenAI has announced that it is adding voice-based features to its mobile app, allowing users to start tasks like writing documents or summarizing emails using voice commands. This update comes as more people are using voice to control AI assistants for complex tasks. In July, OpenAI launched GPT-Live, a new conversational model, and later integrated it into its desktop app. This allowed users to use voice commands to complete tasks in the Work tab or develop applications in the Codex tab. Now, similar voice features are being rolled out to the mobile version of the app. For Plus and Pro users, the mobile app will include access to the Work tab, where they can create documents, draft emails, or summarize messages from Slack. These users will also be able to build websites, create presentations, use a cloud browser, and access financial tools through ChatGPT. Free and Go users, who do not pay for a subscription, will still have access to plugins and connected applications, though with fewer features. OpenAI says that the new voice features will allow ChatGPT to generate more detailed and rich text responses. Users will also be able to switch easily between typing and speaking, and they can start a task on their phone and continue it seamlessly on a desktop computer. This makes it easier to work on projects while traveling or on the move. Recently, a competing AI company called Anthropic made it easier to move between mobile and desktop apps and combined its Cowork and Chat interfaces into a single experience. However, OpenAI still keeps its chat and workspace environments separate, maintaining distinct areas for different types of tasks and interactions.
