A notable feature of both is the ability to upload physical passes using a smartphone camera, a capability that Apple Wallet is only now introducing with iOS 27. Google Wallet has broader compatibility across different devices, offering a web version and support on other Android devices running Android 9 or higher, as well as on Wear OS 2.18 or higher. This means users can pay with Google Wallet on a Samsung Galaxy watch, though it is not available on Samsung’s own Pixel phones due to Samsung Wallet’s exclusivity to Samsung devices. In terms of digital IDs, Google Wallet supports them in 11 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, while Samsung Wallet supports them in eight states. However, Samsung Wallet has an advantage in West Virginia, where Google Wallet is not supported. Samsung Wallet stands out in its support for cryptocurrency. It allows users to link digital asset services like Coinbase or Samsung’s own Blockchain Wallet directly to their wallet app, making it easier to manage and view cryptocurrency holdings alongside other cards and information. Both wallets use similar data encryption methods, but Samsung Wallet may offer a slight security advantage through its integration with KNOX, a hardware-based security system that protects sensitive data at the device level. For users who are unsure which wallet to choose, it is possible to use both Samsung and Google Wallets on the same device. This gives users flexibility, allowing one wallet to act as a backup or alternative to the other, depending on the specific features or services they need.
