The "classics" payment tool, known as Wero, is gaining traction among online banks, with the Dutch bank bunq recently announcing its integration into the app. Wero is part of the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a next-generation payment system designed to streamline cross-border transactions across Europe. Bunq has joined other financial institutions in supporting Wero, which is now available in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg. This move aims to provide users with a more unified and efficient way to manage payments across different countries. With Wero, bunq users can request money, send payments using just a phone number, and make online purchases at partner merchants. However, in-store payments using Wero will not be available until 2027. Bunq is also the first bank in the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Belgium to offer Wero for both person-to-person payments and online purchases. This replaces existing national payment systems such as Paylib in France, Giropay in Belgium, and Payconiq in Luxembourg. Martina Weimert from the EPI, the organization behind Wero, highlighted the benefits of the system, stating that bunq users can now enjoy a "simple and secure payment experience" through the Wero ecosystem. Wero already has around 60 million users and continues to grow. Previously, Wero was available in approximately 25 French banks and about 40 banks worldwide, making this expansion a significant step toward a more integrated European payment landscape. To use Wero on bunq, users need to open the app, tap on their profile photo in the top left corner, select "Settings," choose Wero, link the desired account, accept the terms of use, and click "Activate Wero." Once activated, users can request reimbursements through the main interface. If the contact uses Wero, a small badge will appear next to their name, and the payment will automatically be processed through the European system.
