Dolly Parton, the legendary country singer, passed away on August 25 at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Dean Parton, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82. The couple eloped in 1966 and remained married until his death, maintaining a private relationship largely due to Carl Dean’s reserved nature. While Dolly occasionally spoke about their marriage in interviews, much of their personal life remained out of the public eye. In a recent interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings, Dolly’s sister Stella shared new insights into the couple’s relationship. Stella described Carl Dean as “quiet and shy” and said he adored Dolly, often being fascinated by her public persona. She recalled a moment from 1967 at the BMI Awards, where Dolly won her first major award. According to Stella, Carl was overwhelmed by the crowd and “yanked off his tie,” saying, “I'm never doing this again.” Despite this, Stella said Carl was not encouraging of Dolly’s public life, preferring her to stay home with her hair in a ponytail, barefoot, and cooking in the kitchen. Stella also addressed the impact of Carl Dean’s death on Dolly. While many believed Dolly was heartbroken, Stella suggested that Dolly’s illness may have been due to overwork and poor self-care rather than grief. She emphasized that their relationship was deep, loyal, and unique, and that Dolly was deeply affected by seeing Carl in poor health before his passing. Dolly was laid to rest in a private funeral on August 28 at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville, as she had requested, and was buried next to Carl.
