Passengers on a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 flight were thrown into moments of fear after the plane had to make an emergency U-turn shortly after taking off from Mashhad Airport in Iran. The flight was heading from Mashhad to Kermanshah, a city about 864 miles northeast. According to reports, the aircraft suffered severe vibrations and engine damage, possibly caused by a burst tire. This led to parts of the cabin ceiling collapsing, sending debris into the cabin and causing chaos among the passengers. The incident was captured on video, showing the plane shaking violently as passengers clung to their seats. A loud noise was heard, followed by the collapse of ceiling panels, prompting screams and prayers from those on board. One passenger filmed the event as the plane turned back to Mashhad. The footage revealed damage to the interior, including overhead bins and other fittings. Emergency services and medical teams were ready at the airport when the plane landed. The runway was temporarily closed, but no injuries were reported, and all passengers were safely evacuated and rebooked on a later flight, according to Hassan Jafari, the airline’s spokesperson. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the malfunction, though no official findings have been released yet. This incident occurs amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, as well as sanctions imposed on Iran, which have affected its civil aviation sector. While exporting aircraft parts to Iran is not outright prohibited, broader sanctions have had indirect consequences on the industry. The Trump administration previously imposed sanctions on several Iranian airlines as part of economic pressure against the Iranian government. Aviation incidents in Iran are not rare, even before recent conflicts. Earlier this month, on August 25, another Sepehran Airlines flight encountered an emergency when its nose landing gear collapsed during a flight from Tehran to Mashhad. No one was injured, and all 127 passengers were safely evacuated. The latest incident adds to concerns about the safety and maintenance of Iran’s aging fleet, particularly in a country where economic challenges and international sanctions may impact the ability to maintain and upgrade aircraft.
