Delphine Ernotte Cunci, president of France Télévisions, has raised concerns about the need to save 90 million euros by 2027 due to declining state funding and advertising revenue. The public broadcaster’s 2026 budget already saw a reduction of 80 million euros in state support, bringing the total budget down to 2.37 billion euros. Further cuts are expected in the following year, and a drop in advertising revenue has added an additional 20 million euros to the savings target.
Ernotte Cunci warned that these financial challenges could have serious consequences for France’s audiovisual industry, which is responsible for creating television shows, films, and other media content. She expressed concern that foreign platforms, such as those from the United States or China, might soon become the primary investors in French creative projects. This could lead to a situation where American or Chinese companies have significant influence over what is produced, how it is cast, and even who writes and directs it—what she described as a form of "vassalization."
To adapt to these financial constraints, France Télévisions may have to reduce its investments in audiovisual creation by 60 million euros, bringing the total down from 440 million to 380 million euros in 2027. Ernotte Cunci stressed the importance of preserving France’s unique cultural identity and called for a collective effort to safeguard the industry. She pointed out that the audiovisual sector employs more people than the automotive industry, highlighting its significance to the French economy.
To stay afloat, France Télévisions will look to cut costs across all areas, including renegotiating the prices of programs and sports rights. Some events, such as the French Cup football tournament, may not be renewed if cost reductions are not achieved. The broadcaster is preparing for a challenging period, seeking ways to maintain its role in French culture while adapting to a changing financial landscape.
