Reddit user restores old washing machine's smart features

A Reddit user named McArhony has successfully restored the remote control features of his decade-old Samsung Crystal Blue washing machine using the AI tool Claude, according to a report. The washing machine, once a high-end connected device with a touchscreen, had lost its ability to communicate with the SmartThings app after Samsung discontinued support for its older platform.

Lost connectivity with smart home system

McArhony found himself unable to control the machine from his phone or synchronize it with his connected dryer and The Frame television, which previously displayed notifications when the washing cycle was completed. The loss of connectivity meant he could no longer manage the washing machine remotely or integrate it into his broader smart home setup.

AI-assisted workaround developed

McArhony opted not to replace the washing machine, which he considers quieter and still functional for its connected features, and instead worked with Claude for two hours to bypass the restriction. The AI-assisted solution allowed him to reintegrate his washing machine into the SmartThings ecosystem, enabling remote adjustments to cycles, temperature, and spin settings, as well as synchronization with his dryer.

Limitations and availability of the solution

However, McArhony was unable to integrate the washing machine into the Apple Home app due to lack of success with the interface. The solution he developed is available for free on GitHub and can be used by owners of connected Samsung washing machines produced between 2014 and 2018, thanks to an internal communication system that remained unchanged during that period.

Potential benefits and concerns raised

The manipulation may provide the device with up to five years of additional functionality but raises concerns about the lack of official support for older devices and the potential security risks associated with unofficial modifications. The user expressed surprise that manufacturers do not use AI to extend support for older equipment, suggesting that the goal may be to encourage hardware renewal.

Security risks highlighted by experts

Security risks related to such modifications were also highlighted by SamMobile, emphasizing that unofficial changes to devices can expose them to vulnerabilities that are not accounted for in official software updates or security protocols.
