Prime Video has launched its first French Young Adult film, Toi + Moi - Seuls contre tous, which tells the story of a romance between two students, played by Vittoria Di Savoia and Lucas Barski. The film is based on a book originally published in 2016, which has been revised to remove elements considered outdated or problematic, particularly in light of the MeToo movement. The changes were made by the author, Emma Green, to better align the story with modern values and sensibilities. The film’s director, Manon Gaurin, worked closely with co-writers Eliane Vigneron and Alix Letribot to adapt the story for a broader audience. Gaurin made a conscious effort to reduce the toxicity of the male lead, Vadim, explaining that she wanted to avoid presenting young viewers with a "love story" that centers on a "scumbag." In the original book, Vadim was described as significantly more negative and manipulative, but the film version portrays him in a more balanced and relatable light. The story follows Alma, a privileged law student who dreams of a career in film, and Vadim, a solitary and rebellious classmate. Despite their differences, they are forced to work together on a student film project, which leads to a growing connection between them. The film aims to appeal to younger audiences who may not yet have experienced romantic relationships, offering a more realistic and less dramatic portrayal of love than is common in traditional romance fiction. The original book, Toi + Moi - Envers et contre tous, has been reissued with nearly half of its text revised. These changes reflect the evolving cultural and social norms, particularly regarding gender dynamics and consent. While the film version is more accessible and less extreme than the original, it still retains the core themes of the story: the challenges of young love and the complexities of personal identity.
