As autumn begins, wasps remain active in several regions of France, prompting health warnings and caution among the public. In September, multiple groups of people participating in hikes or bike rides were attacked by wasps, including an incident in Peyrilhac, near Limoges, on Sunday, September 20, where thirty-seven cyclists were injured by wasp stings and four were transported to the hospital. According to Léna Polin, an entomologist and communication officer at the Office for Insects and Their Environment (Opie), the period from September to October is when wasp colonies are at their peak, with the queen producing males and young queens. This results in a high number of wasps, with nests containing hundreds of European wasps or even thousands of Asian wasps. The scarcity of food resources during this time may lead to increased foraging activity outside the nests. Léna Polin explains that wasps generally try to avoid human contact but can become agitated by sudden movements or vibrations, such as those caused by a group of cyclists. She emphasizes the importance of staying away from wasp nests, which are easily recognizable as papier-mâché-like spheres. In the event of a sting, it is recommended to remove the stinger with a fingernail or a flexible card, clean and disinfect the area, and remove rings if the sting is on the hand to prevent hindering blood circulation. A device available in pharmacies can help heat the sting and partially neutralize the venom. Individuals experiencing allergic reactions or symptoms should seek medical attention immediately. It is also advised not to destroy wasp nests oneself, as this can be extremely dangerous. When temperatures decrease, nests will eventually die, leaving only future queens to hibernate until spring. Due to climate change, colder weather may arrive later, allowing nests to persist longer. Once dead, nests should not be destroyed as they can be consumed by other species such as birds. If a nest is discovered in a home, it is recommended to contact the local municipality rather than attempting to remove it oneself.
