Prevalence of Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis is a gynecological condition that could affect up to 30 percent of women of reproductive age. It is a relatively common issue that often goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

Anatomy of Adenomyosis

It is characterized by the presence of tissue similar to that which lines the inside of the uterus, the endometrium, within the myometrium (the muscular layer of the uterus). This misplaced tissue can cause a variety of symptoms and complications.

Types of Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis can be diffuse, when the lesions are spread throughout the uterine muscle, or focal, when one or more well-defined and localized foci are present. These two forms can impact diagnosis and treatment approaches differently.

Symptoms of Adenomyosis

Although it is considered a benign condition, it is far from harmless and can cause heavy and disabling symptoms: pelvic pain, most often during menstruation, and abnormal uterine bleeding. These symptoms can significantly affect a woman’s quality of life.

Impact on Daily Life

The condition can lead to chronic pain, fatigue, and emotional distress, often requiring medical intervention. Women may need to seek treatment to manage symptoms and improve their overall well-being.
