Starting this Thursday, free users of ChatGPT will gradually gain access to the GPT-6 model, following the availability for paying subscribers. OpenAI is introducing this update alongside a new feature called Intelligent UI, which enables the chatbot to generate interactive tools such as calculators and diagrams directly within conversations. Previously, GPT-6 was reserved for paying users in the Work and Codex sections of ChatGPT. OpenAI has now expanded access to the Chat tab, where GPT-6.1 Sol was introduced during its DevDay on September 29. As of now, the model is available to the over 1.2 billion people who use ChatGPT weekly. While the rollout promises a more inclusive experience, the models available to free and paid users differ. OpenAI has connected GPT-6 Sol to the Chat tab for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, while GPT-6 Luna is linked to the Free and Go plans. Both models are designed for everyday conversations, but at their launch on September 23, they had distinct purposes. Sol was meant for complex projects, especially coding, while Luna was intended for routine tasks. This distinction is reflected in the cost: one million input tokens cost $2 with Sol and just 10 cents with Luna, a twentyfold difference. In internal evaluations, OpenAI found that GPT-6 outperformed its predecessor, GPT-5.6, by 1.5 to 2.4 points in web search tasks. However, the paid model, GPT-6 Sol, consistently outperformed the free model, GPT-6 Luna, by about a dozen points. Free users benefit from the new generation and Intelligent UI, but they receive the lighter model, which lags significantly behind Sol in these tests. In terms of security, OpenAI has integrated features from GPT-6 Astra, a model slowed down earlier this year due to its strong cybersecurity protections. GPT-6 is also more resistant to attempts to bypass its defenses across multiple messages. With Intelligent UI, OpenAI has trained GPT-6 to generate text, visuals, and interactive elements based on user questions. In one example, a user planning a Sunday roast can input the number of guests, and the system recalculates the shopping list with each click. It can also generate a savings calculator or a tool to split a bill among friends in a single message. "ChatGPT has mainly been a text interface," said Aarush Selvan, product lead at OpenAI, during a press demonstration. For tasks like planning a trip or learning something new, "the most useful answers do not limit themselves to text," he added. To enable this, OpenAI has developed a library of native components and a compiler that displays the interface as the response is generated, without waiting for the full response. The company also began showing parts of the response before the model completes its thinking. For questions requiring web research, users see the first words 44% earlier on average than with GPT-5.6 Instant. Despite these advancements, the system still has flaws, and OpenAI acknowledges the need for improvement in layout choices. Users will also be able to reduce the number of visuals in their responses. In the long term, OpenAI aims to create more interfaces for everyday tasks, envisioning a future where "software will adapt to people" instead of the other way around.
