France is advancing its MALE drone program with new domestic designs, including Asman Technology’s ITAR-free Sentinel MK1, emphasizing ISR and electronic warfare capabilities.
French military seeks new drone solutions
Fifteen years ago, France debated replacing its Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones, with discussions focusing on either adapting the Israeli Heron TP or purchasing the American MQ-9 Reaper. This period also saw the launch of the Telemos program, which did not move forward, while the EuroDrone program, led by Airbus, was initiated.EuroDrone program faces delays
The EuroDrone program, intended to provide France with a new generation of MALE drones, has not yet performed its maiden flight. As a result, the French Ministry of the Armed Forces has abandoned its reliance on this program, shifting focus to more affordable alternatives.New French drone initiatives emerge
At the 2025 Paris Air Show, the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA) provided subsidies to five French companies to develop new MALE drones. These include Turgis Gaillard, Daher, SE Aviation, Aura Aero, and Fly'R, with the first three having already completed their first flights.Asman Technology enters the race
Despite not being selected by the DGA, Asman Technology is close to launching its DSLR Sentinelle MK1 drone. This MALE drone is designed for electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions and is built without any American components, making it "ITAR Free."Sentinelle MK1's capabilities
The DSLR Sentinelle MK1 is equipped with electromagnetic intelligence (ROEM) and electronic warfare (GE) modules from Eviden, a subsidiary of Atos. It is designed to autonomously collect intelligence by integrating airborne sensors, mission communications, and data exploitation systems into a single platform.Technical specifications of the drone
With a 15-meter wingspan and a takeoff weight of 1,000 kg, the Sentinelle MK1 is considered lightweight compared to similar drones. It can take off and land automatically, including on short runways, and has a 200 kg payload capacity. It can fly at 23,000 feet, cruise at 200 km/h, and operate for 21 hours on a single flight.Adaptability and mission flexibility
Asman Technology emphasizes the drone's open and modular design, allowing it to be quickly adapted for various missions such as ISR, electronic warfare, and maritime surveillance. It supports both line-of-sight and satellite communication, making it versatile for different operational needs.
